The 15 second typing test is the quickest way to check your top speed. It is a short sprint, so it rewards a clean start and a fast burst. It is a favourite for warming up before a longer test and for beating a friend's score.
Your WPM is your correct characters divided by five and by the minutes you typed. Here is what different speeds add up to in 15 seconds:
| Speed | Words in 15 seconds | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| 30 WPM | 7.5 words | 38 characters |
| 40 WPM | 10 words | 50 characters |
| 50 WPM | 12.5 words | 63 characters |
| 60 WPM | 15 words | 75 characters |
| 80 WPM | 20 words | 100 characters |
| 100 WPM | 25 words | 125 characters |
Short tests usually give your highest WPM. A 15 second score is often 5% to 15% higher than your one minute score, because there is no time to get tired. Do not compare a 15 second number with a one minute number directly.
For comparison, most people type between 38 and 45 WPM, 45 to 65 is good, and 65 and up is fast. See the full table on the average typing speed page.
Read two words ahead, start the moment the text appears, and do not stop to fix mistakes. In 15 seconds one wrong letter costs less than a pause does.
It measures your burst speed well, but a single lucky or unlucky word moves the result more than on a longer test. For a steadier number, take a 30 or 60 second test as well.
At 40 WPM you type about 10 words, at 60 WPM about 15 words and at 80 WPM about 20 words.
You do not get tired in 15 seconds and a quick start counts for a big part of the test. The one minute score is the better guide to your everyday speed.
