Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). One word is five characters, spaces included, so the number does not depend on how long the words are. Most people type between 38 and 45 WPM. Here is how the ranges usually look:
| Level | WPM | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | under 30 | Looking at the keys, finding letters one by one |
| Average | 30 to 45 | Comfortable for email, chat and homework |
| Good | 45 to 65 | Meets most job requirements for typing |
| Fast | 65 to 90 | Touch typing with few glances at the keyboard |
| Very fast | 90 to 120 | Competitive typists and daily writers |
| Elite | 120 and up | Years of practice and a good keyboard |
Your WPM counts only the characters in words you typed correctly, plus the spaces between them, divided by five and by the minutes you typed. Raw counts every character you typed, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of your key presses that were correct, and a corrected mistake still counts against it. Consistency shows how steady your speed was from second to second: a higher number means a smoother run.

Look at the screen and not at your hands, keep your fingers on the home row, and aim for steady, even rhythm before speed. Typing slower with fewer mistakes usually raises your score within a week or two, because fixing errors costs more time than careful typing does.
Raw speed counts every key you hit. WPM only counts the words you got right, so each wrong word takes away from it. If the two numbers are far apart, slow down a little and your WPM will go up.
Short tests such as 15 and 30 seconds show your top speed. Longer ones like 60 and 120 seconds show how well you hold that speed. Use the one that matches what you want to measure.
