2 minute typing test

The 2 minutes typing test

A two minute test shows whether your first minute speed holds up. Many people start fast and slow down once their hands settle and small mistakes begin to add up. It is a good middle choice when one minute feels too short to be fair.

How many words in 2 minutes?

Your WPM is your correct characters divided by five and by the minutes you typed. Here is what different speeds add up to in 2 minutes:

SpeedWords in 2 minutesCharacters
30 WPM60 words300 characters
40 WPM80 words400 characters
50 WPM100 words500 characters
60 WPM120 words600 characters
80 WPM160 words800 characters
100 WPM200 words1000 characters

What to expect from your score

Expect your WPM to be about the same as your one minute score or a few percent lower. If your two minute result is within about 5% of your one minute result, your rhythm is steady.

For comparison, most people type between 38 and 45 WPM, 45 to 65 is good, and 65 and up is fast. See the full table on the average typing speed page.

A tip for the 2 minutes test

Use the second minute to find your pace. A steady speed that you can hold usually scores higher than a burst that you cannot keep up for the whole two minutes.

Questions

Is a two minute test more accurate than one minute?

It is a little more stable, because one lucky or unlucky sentence matters less. Most people see results close to their one minute score.

How many words do I type in two minutes?

At 40 WPM you type about 80 words, at 60 WPM about 120 words and at 80 WPM about 160 words.

Why is my score lower than on the one minute test?

Tired hands and small mistakes show up in the second minute. Slow down by a few words per minute and keep your accuracy high.
