30 day typing practice plan
Ten to fifteen minutes a day for 30 days is enough to learn touch typing or to push past a plateau. Here is a plan, week by week.
The plan
| Week | What to do | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Do lessons 1 to 7, one or two a day. Keep your eyes on the screen. | Finish the letters at 15 WPM, 90% accuracy |
| Week 2 | Do lessons 8 to 12: capitals, numbers, punctuation and common words. | Type common words at 25 WPM, 92% accuracy |
| Week 3 | Do lessons 13 to 15. Then take the 1 minute test every day and write down the number. | One minute test at 30 to 40 WPM |
| Week 4 | Take a 3 minute and a 5 minute test. Add the punctuation and numbers tests. | Keep your speed over five minutes, with 95% accuracy |
A daily session
- Two minutes of slow, accurate warm up.
- Eight minutes on the day's lesson or test.
- Two minutes on the keys or words that gave you trouble.
Stop when your hands feel tense. A short, calm session works better than a long, rushed one.
Keep a log
Write your WPM and accuracy after each session. A simple note is enough. Looking back after a week shows progress that is hard to see day to day.
After 30 days
Keep practising two or three times a week. Take the free typing certificate when you reach a goal, race other people in the typing races, or use the leaderboard to see how you compare.
Questions
Can I really type faster in 30 days?
Most people who practise ten to fifteen minutes a day gain 10 to 20 WPM in a month, and many learn to touch type.
What if I miss a day?
Carry on the next day. One missed day does not matter.
What if I already type 50 WPM?
Skip to the week 3 and week 4 tests and pay attention to accuracy and rhythm.
