This typing test uses easy, everyday words, so children can check their speed without hard spelling getting in the way. Pick a grade below for a test and a speed goal that suit their age.
It depends on age and on how much they practise. Younger children are still learning where the letters are, so accuracy and comfort matter more than speed. By grade 5 most children who practise reach 20 to 25 WPM, and by grade 8 many are at 35 to 40. See the full table on typing speed by grade.
Keep sessions short, praise accuracy and effort rather than speed, and let them beat their own score. The typing lessons take them one row at a time, and the typing races are a fun step up once they are comfortable.
The test on this page does not ask for an account, does not collect names and keeps results on the device. Results from kids tests are not added to the leaderboard. Children aged 13 and over can make an account if they want to; younger children can use everything here without one.
Most schools start keyboard lessons around grade 3 (age 8 to 9). Younger children can play with the keys earlier, as long as sessions stay short and relaxed.
About 15 to 25 WPM is common for a child of 10 who has had some practice. It is a rough guide, not a rule.
