Most school work is typed now: essays, notes, online quizzes and group documents. A faster, more accurate typing speed gives you more time to think about what you are writing.
| Level | Typical WPM | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Middle school (grades 6 to 8) | 25 to 40 | Enough for homework and short essays |
| High school (grades 9 to 12) | 40 to 60 | Comfortable for long essays and timed tests |
| College | 50 and up | Notes in class and long papers without strain |
These are common goals, not rules. If you type 35 WPM and make few mistakes, you are in good shape. Check younger students on the kids test, or find your grade on typing speed by grade.
On a timed written exam on a computer, every minute spent on slow typing is a minute not spent on the answer. A student who types 50 WPM can get about 500 words down in ten minutes. A student who types 25 WPM gets about 250. Take a 5 minute test to see your steady speed, which is a better guide for exams than a short burst.
For high school, 40 to 60 WPM is a good range. For college, 50 WPM or more makes long papers and note taking easier.
Most do not. Some courses and exams are typed, so a comfortable speed helps you finish on time.
Take a five minute test to see your steady speed, and practise typing full sentences with punctuation and numbers.
